Our Review

Editor's Rating
Editorial ReviewHandcrafted Homes did not have a long history but in a short time it developed a good reputation for above average modular homes. Their factory was modern and their building specifications were very high. There were bigger providers but their medium size allowed them to maintain high quality according to the builders we interviewed. This was a good option for anyone in their delivery range seeking a mid range to upper scale home.

I am very upset. We bought and paid cash for a HCH in 2012. The builder assured us to wait 3 years after living in the home for them to come and fix the cracks in the walls in every single room! We waited the 3 years and called only to find out that our builder was out of business in New Bern. So what are we to do now? Still have cracks in the walls, The kitchen sink totally fell the only thing holding it up were the pipes, no silicon was used and we had upgraded to granite countertops so don't know if that was the problem or not. The hardwood floors in the kitchen and the living room have buckled in two different places. The insulation on the 2nd story was not done properly .... Guess the next step is to start harassing Henderson and see if we can get any satisfaction and get things fixed. I love my house but it shouldn't have this many problems. The kitchen sink still needs to be fixed!!!!! HELP FROM CORPORATE IS NEEDED BECAUSE YOUR LOCAL BUILDER IS GONE!!!!

I had an unlicensed contractor/HCH rep sell my home to me-he was rather worthless as a builder: he built my deck only to find it would not pass inspection because it was structurally unsound. I wonder where the accountability was concerning HCH with him being an unlicensed contractor. I originally went with HCH because a good friend who is a master craftsman-very particular fellow bought a home from HCH-he went to the factory in Henderson and was very impressed. Therefore that total convinced me to go with the company. I loved my cape cod- it was a fantastic home! The big problem was with the original shingles that were put on the house. About 6 years after my house was completed, the roof started to leak through my left dormer and ceiling in the right section of the 2nd story. Come to find out, the original shingles were defective however HCH never took responsibility for this issue. I had a roof contractor come in and replace the roof with a tin roof which I highly recommend. I sold the house since and I am considering in ordering another cape cod now that I am wiser with how to handle issues. I am checking into a fellow I know who is the local rep for HCH in Boone, NC and a licensed contractor. I truly believe my contractor along with HCH were the issue with not getting things done correctly with my home but feel perhaps I would look at the company again.

AS A BUILDER,THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!

Eric Phillips from NC
We did a lot of homework before choosing Handcrafted in 2011. We couldn't be happier with our home. I inspect construction for a living, based on the quality fellow inspectors, architects, and other modular-savvy contacts have seen... we went with modular construction. The caveat being you have to choose a reputable builder, like Handcrafted. Again, I've lived in many types of housing, inspected all levels of residential construction, and am overwhelmingly pleased with the home we bought. If they still offer it, go with 2x6 exterior walls. The price/sq. ft. is very reasonable, so we opted for upgrades, not pushing them to see how cheap they could do it. Extremely happy after 5+ years. We are living in our dream house.

We like how they are built

Matt Edelen from Spotsylvania VA
Hi my name's Matt edelen have a handcrafted home that is improperly insulated. but everytime I call they say I will call you back and never do my house is a 2007 cap cod and behind the knee walls there's attic space which is not insulated to the first floor took until 2016 to figure it out only when it was windy one day and I felt a large burst of air come through a recessed can upon opening my ceiling and cutting holes in the drywall discovered that there is no insulation and it was 38 degrees above my drywall guess that will explain my high energy bills

Cinda Shevrovich from Capac, MI
HandCrafted homes is by far better than any company in MI. I wish they had a site here. I would have them build me a home in a heartbeat. They are #1 in my book! I used to work as a sales consultant with the company and when I compare others to them their is no comparison.

Douglas Ramsey from Brunswick VA.
Hand crafted homes built our home in 2006, several issues have come forward with our home. The walls have bad cracks, within the first year HCH and contractor repaired but within two years the cracked walls were repaired again and now 2010 cracks are bad again!! The front door woods supports rotted by second year and repaired with composit but now the entire front door and sidelites need replacing, we paid big money for the front door "options". The electrical systems in the house are not working properly, and electrical contracter has been contacted to address this issue!! Problems in boxes where all the wiring is tied together. IT does no good to contact HCH or contractor once warrenty expires as they are glad to wipe their hands of responsibilty but bad workmanship and poor quality have no warrenty limits, I have advised friends and family "not to purchase" a HCH.

Response from Keith Cochran at HandCrafted Homes
In response to Mr. Ramsey's post, there were several factory service items that were addressed within the warranty period. None of the items mentioned are recorded.

If cracks are appearing four years after set, there is a problem with the foundation. Please check for settling. The foundation is not the responsibility of HCH but it can impact the performance of the home greatly. The electrical issues remain after four years? Mr. Ramsey is a patient man. The electrical connections "in the boxes" are the builder's responsibility. A licensed electrician should have made the connection at the time the home was set. The doors used by HCH are received primed, not painted and should have been painted before C of O was issued to protect the jambs. We only use exterior doors with "no-rot" jambs. Is there water shedding towards the door?

I understand Mr. Ramsey's frustration but none of the complaints are a reflection of the quality of the home purchased.

Gayle Meyer from Radford VA
I am very dissappointed in my Handcraft Home. After touring the factory and spending much time consulting with my builder I thought I was really buying a quality home. My floors look like they were put in by a person that didn't really know what they were doing. I can't seem to get co-operation from HANDCRAFT OR MY BUILDER to fix the problem they just keep putting the blame back and forth on each other. I don't feel it should be my responsiblity to decide this. There on numerious problems that I had to live with because I couldn't get any co-operation from either party to fix. I would never recommend this company or a modular home to anyone. The time it took to get my home ready for us to move in I could of build a stick built home. If anyone would like to reply to this I would be happy to hear from you 540-731-1318.

Response from Keith Cochran at HandCrafted Homes
I would like to respond to Mrs. Meyers' review. I have contacted the moderator of this site with no response so I will respond directly.

First of all, HandCrafted Homes made several visits to the home to address the issues mentioned. A representative of the flooring manufacturer also visited the home to inspect the floor and determined much of the condition of the floors were due to the homeowner not following manufacturer's instructions when cleaning the floors. HCH addressed all issues reported by the customer that were our responsibility and went beyond that in at least one instance.
