Our Review

Editor's Rating
Editorial ReviewExcel Homes is an above average provider of modular homes. They closed in 2016 but were reopend by Champion Homes. They offer a very good selection of customization and premium options. Their homes are targeted towards the mid range to upper scale home buyers. Our mystery shopper enjoyed their website which has alot of information including the many upgrades that are available. These are homes that you would be happy to live in.

Personal Reviews of Excel Homes

Duval from Freeport, me
Our home was delivered in 2008. We love our home. It has been a "problem free home". Modular Advantage was selling Excell. We were very fortunate to have "Dionne" who was the manager who make sure we were part of every decision. Building a home is a very stressful . Surround yourself with people you can trust.

Very pleased with the home of our dreams. Stays warm in winter, cool in summer. No problems at all, and I hope they can reorganize and resume their business. From our introductory trip to the plant to the sign-off, we were very satisfied. I have building experience myself, and could find no mis-steps in the home's construction. I wish them well.

20 years and we are now downsizing - a few bolts are showing. The issues we had when we bought it were not the manufactures fault it was the set people and the finishers that were hired by our contractor. The house is solid, over the years we've made upgrades.

5/15/2016 Tried to get them on facebook after unsuccessfully attempting to contact them directly. They have discontinued their facebook page. Beware! They may have pulled the plug on the business!

John Ruth from Sparrows Point, Md
My home has leaked since day one. They've come out and replace the door on the back side of the house and my kitchen floor because of water leaking in. And I still have a water leak in my new kitchen floor is ruined also and I have mold now and they're walking away from it. They don't care about your health or your well-being. Don't buy an excel home.

Brenda Schmitt from United States
We bought our home in 2012. After being in it for 2 years, I can now say that Excel could have done much better. Some plumbing is backwards, i.e the hot comes out of the cold in the master bath. We spent a lot of time figuring out where we wanted light switches and outlets. While they followed our placement, they have the fans on the switch first and the lights on the far switch - ?? Also, drywall seams in the ceilings are really starting to show. We expected nail pops but what we have in the ceilings is unacceptable. At this point, my husband who can fix anything will fix their mistakes. I would not want any employee of Excel in my home at this time. While our house was on the smaller end of builds, we feel like it was built before lunch hour and they took a break and let the new guy finish it all. So while I love my home its not because of Excel's standards that is for certain.

My wife has had ours 22 yrs, and it's doing well for us.

We are very pleased with our home in Wells, ME. We had a very positive experience with Mr. Kevin Trundy. We have a problem with our windows. They are very hard to open/close. Tried to find MV Windows on line, with no success. Can you help us with this problem?

Gary Tremblay from Bedford Massachusetts
We had Bob Dion from Value Homes of New Englang Set and complete the home. I have been in it since 2001. I am very happy with the quality of the home and the service Bob and his staff supplied. The home is solid inside and out. The only regrets are that I didn't upgrade the kitchen cabinets and I should have realy reviewed some of the smaller details such as installing closets in bathrooms and placement of electrical outlets were I could have used them. I would do it again for certain. My best advice to prospective buyer is 1. have a general contracter with experience such as Bob do the job up to occupency certificate. 2. Review the plans over and over, make sure you don't forget anything 3. when in dought upgrade, the best thing I ever did was had nine foot ceilings upgraded windows and ceiling fans in all the bedrooms.

Never NEVER NEVER pay excell the balance on delivery make sure you have at least five working day's to check out the structure. also there is a fine print in your warrnaty pack that say's you only have five day's to file any complaints and you must use their forms. What happens if does not rain for ten day's you are screwed. two of my window's leak, the roof leaks, and the slider leaks. My five day's are up. have to get a lawyer. Make sure you have a pro builder ( not the guy who sold you the house)walk thru your home and check it out. When you see your house being delivered you are too excited to check out what is wrong.

Communication is horrible. H.I.G. investments bought all the assets I spoke with them they said they only deal with their investors. five day's have gone buy cannot speak to anyone, leave a message we will get back to you. they forgot to say when or in what year. they have my money but I do not have my house.

Excell got my money first week in May delivery set for first week in july, then changed to second week changed again to last week in July noe looking at the middle of August. Trying to speak with someone is a night mare. Great service before they got my money. I just hope they are still in bussiness.

Brian from Kinderhook, NY
We moved into our new home in December of 2009. It took just 6 weeks from the day the plant received our money to the day the house arrived at our property. We are very pleased with the building of the house and the materials. The factory has been back several times to fix the small problems we had (I am very picky). All the problems were small (cracking walls, sticky doors, a few bad windows) and were able to be fixed. They are all very nice, take their shoes off, clean up after themselves and get the job done. The only draw backs that I saw were to make sure your plan is exactly how you want it...wish we moved a window or two and had more lights in the kitchen, wish we had a larger fireplace, the standard one is very small and a few small other items but these are things we can change on our own later on. The other thing I would like is either a rep to talk to at the factory or pictures when your house is being built.
Highly recommend them! We also had a tough job, 3250 square foot house on the top of a very steep hill, but they did it, and it looks GREAT!

Michael Eck from Cape May, NJ
I also purchased an Excel home through Nieman Homes. The house arrived as planned and the finish was very good. The set went well and any problems (of which were very limited) were fixed by a factory rep. The set crew went beyond what they were supposed to, in order to get the home sealed before bad weather arrived. A local builder and I finished the home and found no problems with the building or construction. The only complaint that I could have is that there is poor communication between factory reps and the end user. There were some minor items that turned into larger projects than they needed to due to the fact that they prohibit communication, except through the builder. The proscess could be more streamlined if you did not need to call the builder to find out if certian items were available, who would in turn call the factory and than the builder would have to call you back and you would repeat the process if the first option fell through.
As far as the builder goes. Ed was great to deal with and I feel as though our families will be friends for long time to come. He was truely concerned with getting us a quality product that would last my family for many years. I trust his family so much that they now babysit my children, which is something that we are very particular about. I would recommend Nieman Builders with out hesitation.
