Our Review

Editor's Rating
Editorial ReviewDesign Homes is not a common modular home provider. They build quality homes and sell directly to the public this helps keep the price low and the quality high. Their website is not flashy and a little hard to navigate but it is filled with helpful information. These homes are good homes for any mid range home buyer. It is also very refreshing to see a modular home provider include pricing information on the website.

JEFF AND JANIS LARSEN from wisconsin
We like our home, but have had issues with the windows. in winter they leak air, windows have condensation. We had called first winter and were told it was normal. we have been in home since 2012

Jan Culver from Waukesha, Wi
I've lived in my Design Home sixteen years and really enjoy it. I designed it with tweaking by salesperson. Had one issue of leaking from roof peak, only with rain shearing sideways, which caulking fixed. Very warm, well insulated building. Siding looks good, some windows may need replacing now. Overall, beautiful. Am looking into building again through Design Homes.

jenny from Iowa
Love our home, 7 years strong. I laugh at peoples comments on 10 -15 year old homes they think will never need repairs, all homes need repairs after 10-15 years. Excellent Home/well priced. SmartHome

Tim Walrod from MC Iowa
Bought a home from the Clear Lake office 18 years ago. Going strong. Replaced a few shingles and added a garage. Great office. Great people. Great product.

Elizabeth Jorgenson from WI
Windows are really cheap, they don't even stay open! We have replaced several koehler faucets, and several pin holes in the copper tubing, The orange peel texture crew was so poor , i can still see all the places they "fixed" Such a disappointment!!

Bert Snyder from Rockwell, Iowa
Nice price mid level build. Needs representation in North Iowa.

Paul Hubbard from Mason City
Bought our home last summer after strong recommendations from the former GM sat their Clear Lake sales office. Rick came over and aided us, and we dealt with Tracy B has our sales connection. Rick owns Kodiak Homes in Mason City and endorsed Design Homes and a mid-level built home, priced right. Thank you Design Homes and Kodiak Homes for your expertise that saved us big bucks. Amazing that an ex employee (Rick-Kodiak Homes left in 2012) still endorses a product, says a lot about the product!.

Jennifer from Rural Clear Lake,Iowa
Had our home 10 years, minor issues, bought from the former Clear Lake office. Now closest lot is 2 hours away. Company shrunk. It is a middle line product but well priced.

Roger Stalheim from Saint Charles, ia
We like the home and seems to be built well. We have gone through 2 winters and we think it performs well.

Linfa mcCann from Wisconsin
We purchased our DH in 1970 we no longer live there but the home is still there, It was an awesome home 3 bedroom , Great, Great house. Thinking about looking at one again.

Tom Back from Palo, IA
Purchased Design Home after the flood of 2008. One of the problems we have noticed is that the seams of the drywall are not taped. Many cracks have developed over time from settling and driving over the many miles to deliver our home. Other things, such as replacing a globe on our Royal Pacific lighting. We cannot find local outlet to purchase replacements.

Jason from NE IOWA
They need more experienced salespeople. Went to Ames sales location and I knew more then he did (and that's not saying much).

Cheryl from NE
Our house was destroyed by a tornado in 2014 and we went to numerous modular home builders to price and look at different designs. We were impressed with how up front design homes was with their pricing. We went to the Missouri valley office and we're very pleased with the salesman that helped to design our home. Our house was in place by the end of that year. We have been very pleased with the quality of the home and to this point, have had no issues.

Tracy from Forest City
Nice home. mid priced.

Robert Snediker from Northern iowa
We bought ours 5 years back from the Clear Lake office. We have had only a few minor issue, just like you would any site built home. Manager in Clear Lake custom designed it for us. Very good experience. I would stay away from any stock or display models because they sit vacant to long with no heat.

Donelle from Missouri Valley
Just loved our new home from DH. It was put up in September of 2014. We dealt with Missouri Valley on a home we liked. However, because they had the same house in their closing Salix location, we chose it because of discount. We could not look at inside of home because of standing water around homes. The water wasn't even close to touching houses, and we were guaranteed there were no issues with the house. We were so thrilled with the discount and the fact that the house had upgraded windows, doors, shingles, and insulation. From the start of them setting the house I was not impressed with crew. They did a horrible job of caulking, repairing cracks, adjusting doors, repairing damage from crane straps, replacing trim pieces, and plumbing. Our doorway going to garage had obvious leaks and mold and fungi were growing heavily. They replaced that door, trim, wall, and insulation. Then we had them here because that same door, and front door continually leak and would not stay shut if wind blew that direction. They fixed it several times. We still get doors blowing open with a moderate wind. We put storm doors on, which took care of the leaking and opening issues. If these are upgraded windows, I would hate to see their cheap ones. These leak air horribly!!! We even tried using clear caulk but they are still really drafty. Or bathroom and kitchen counters keep pulling away from walls and we have to caulk over and over. Many wood trim pieces have large gaps and don't line up. Two of our sinks leaked because connectors were over tightened. Many of the walls keep cracking along ceiling, and linoleum has many holes and rips. Just really rushed and shoddy! IF YOU GET ONE GET ONE WITHOUT THEIR CRAP DOORS AND WINDOWS AND PUT YOUR OWN IN!!!!!

David from Garner, Iowa
After reading some posts I'm disappointed the Clear lake office is closed. I too dealt with Rick Sullivan GM at that sales location. We bought a home and wanted to buy again and one for my mother. He had the whole process and options laid out so it was easy to buy and I always felt at ease when leaving after reviewing changes. Is the company hurting? I really want to buy again but maybe I should look around. aughhh

Jennifer S from Charles City, Iowa
We had visited many Design Homes offices. Talked with many managers. Ames and Ham Lake Mn to name a few. Clear Lake had the best and most informed office. Rick was amazing. Now we are getting more serious to start the process, no Clear Lake office left. No models. Nothing. We looked elsewhere and found Dynamic Homes to be great. Friendly.

David from Clear Lake, Iowa
We have been saving for a DH home for 4 years. We go back to the sales site to deal with Rick, and it's not there. Gone. Rick constantly updated us with information until a year or so ago. We would only buy from him. Where they went we don't know. Why they left? Company sales must be down. Good product. Great salesperson. ...sad situation.

Joel from Lodi, WI
I have had my design home for 7 years now. Umm lets see where do I begin... I have repaired 5 leaks in the roof to date. They did a horrible job of applying the orange peel texture to the walls. While fixing the water damage to a wall I found a wire had been smashed on the top plate (not to worry the SOBs wrapped it with electrical tape). In the design homes commercial they state that the floors are glued and screwed "no squeaks here". When I pulled back the carpet to re stretch I was unhappy to see that nails were used to attach the sub floor and not a single screw. I guess this explains the several squeaks throughout the house. I'm not sure if the set crew was friendly of not because they never spoke more than 2 sentences to me. The repair crew was very good at cutting corners Examples Due to cracking they kept gobbing painters caulk into the inside corners of our rooms and left us with nice ugly rounded inside corners. The fascia on the gable end of our house was all wavy so I asked the crew to fix it. I came home later that day to see that they simply cut the fascia into several shorter pieces and nailed them back in instead of fixing the root cause of the problem (hinged roof truss not straightened properly). The roof line of our house looks like a wave because the set crew nailed in the hinged roof trusses at different heights. My list goes on and on but I am getting frustrated and angry just thinking about it. Bottom line Design homes only gives each home a one year warranty now I know why.

Myrna Wesselman from Rochester, MN
Our house was built in 2003, and the skylight leaked as soon as we moved in - in early 2004. This was replaced but the new began leaking as well as the one in the main bath, with water coming out the ceiling light fixture.

This has been an ungoing battle trying to get help with water soaking the skylight walls as well as the walls in the living room, dining area, and kitchen. I ask if someone would come and give us an idea of how to fix the problem "ourselves" but it cost too much to send people out to look at troubles like this. The ladder is rarely taken down as my husband goes on top of the roof to remove a snowflake, but nothing can be done about the rain, as it makes stains down the walls. He now has terminal lung cancer and went out today, so weak he can hardly be up and around a few minutes, and was going to try and climb on the roof to remove the latest few inches of snow. And we've never been able to get help from Design Homes of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin in 8 to 9 years of leaks.

Design Homes is an outstanding company to work with. We purchased our new home from the Greenwood Nebraska site and believe it is one of the best investments my wife and I have ever made. They not only custom designed our new home to meet our personal needs but build us a quality residential home that would rival any site build home. We were not a where that such quality can be found in a modular home. Design Homes are a definite 5 stars!

Lawrence from Iowa
I bought a home from Design Homes. My wife and I love it. The saleperson, set crew, finish and service people were all very professional. I especially liked Dan in service. We have recommended them to other family and freinds.

Rusty Seidel from clear lake
yes I have a new home from Design homes 5years now and is the very best home a person can get they worked with me and when need repairs were on top of this right away so if you can work with them its a 5star home

Charlie from Greenwood, NE
Not impressed at all. My impression when I entered was that I was entering a trailer not a home. The models and the areas around them were not well maintained so this was an immediate "buyer beware". Maybe the quality is at the factory? Choices were very limited for trim and counter tops. I was told that they have a architect on the premises so that was the reason for the 2 star and not a one star.
